**Enourage your children to believe in themselves.  Learning begins when children believe they can succeed.

Homework Tips:

  • Choose a quiet place, away from distractions.
  • Open assignment book to see what homework is listed.
  • Make sure you have needed materials ready: pencil, paper, books, etc.
  • Work on one subject at a time.
  • Work for fifteen minutes, then take a 5 minute break.
  • Continue working until assignment is completed.
  • When assignment is completed, check off that item on your assignment book.
  • Put all books, etc, pertaining to that assignment away before beginning another assignment.

Students need to READ, READ, and READ!!  WHY? :

**Research shows that students should be reading 100-120 pages per week to raise reading level.

**Reading comprehension test scores are more influenced by student's amount of engaged reading than any other single factor. (Reading Essentials, by Reggie Routman)

.

Tips for Reading Comprehension:

**Before reading, have the student take a "picture walk".  They will come up with ideas about what their book will be about.

**Asking questions before, during, and after reading aids in comprehension.

**Encourage students to make connections before, during, and after they have read.  They may make connections to things in their life, to things in the world, or to other books they have read.

**Have the child take notes as they read.  (sticky notes are good for this)

**After they've read a passage, have them stop and ask themselves, "What did I just read?" .  If they can't answer that question, they need to read it again.  Research consistently shows that rereading is one of the most highly recommended strategies for struggling readers.

**Encourage the students to make predictions before and during their reading experience.

**If they come up against an unknown word, have them skip it, read the rest of the sentence, then go back and try to figure out what would make sense.

**Some children may comprehend better if they read aloud.
